Becoming a Successful Trader: The Trader’s Trap

Are you in the Technical Trader's Trap?

This article in The Trader’s Pendulum Series explores the Technical Trader’s Trap and offers insights on how traders can escape it. As a successful trader and coach for the past 40 years, I’ve had the privilege of closely observing the top performers in the industry. One thing I’ve noticed is that while most of them have expert technical skills, technical knowledge alone doesn’t make them stand out. The key is learning entrepreneurial skills and cultivating the right habits.

There’s no significant difference between Farah and Stacey (pictured above) in terms of intelligence, education, prior experience, or personal caliber. Both are professionals in their respective fields—young, intelligent, ambitious, and highly dedicated to making their careers a success.

However, there’s a crucial difference in how they approach trading.

Farah is like the majority of traders, caught in the Technical Trader’s Trap. These traders, often referred to as “hobbyist traders” or “technical junkies,” focus heavily on technical analysis. Despite years of experience, mastery of various trading techniques, and significant time, effort, and money invested, they fail to reach the next level of success because they lack a true business mindset.

Stacey, on the other hand, belongs to a rare group of successful traders who treat trading as a serious business and run it with precision. These are the Entrepreneurial Traders, who know exactly what they’re doing. They set clear goals for their trading business, plan their trades, follow those plans, and hold themselves accountable for their trading careers. Most successful traders fall into this category, and this is no accident.

Successful traders embrace an entrepreneurial approach to managing their trading business. They set goals, plan their business, continuously review their strategies, execute their plans, and focus on self-improvement. With this mindset, success becomes inevitable.

In contrast, average traders are “technical junkies,” trapped in the Technical Trader’s Trap, obsessed with constantly acquiring new technical knowledge or trying out new systems, often at the cost of making consistent profits. The challenge is, they don’t know how to transition their trading to a higher level of success—they believe gathering more information will get them there.

I’ve developed a plan that will help Farah transform from a “technical junkie” into an Entrepreneurial Trader by learning the 10 Habits of Successful Traders. This plan has successfully guided many traders I’ve coached through their transformation, and I’m confident it will help Farah as well.

Most importantly, it can help YOU too.

If you’re ready to become a trader or investor who stays out of the Technical Trader’s Trap, you’ll need to adopt a professional, entrepreneurial mindset. Next week’s article will dive into the Transformation Process for Traders.
